Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest in a consistory celebrated in 1057; his title is not known. On May 4, 1082, he protested against the use of church property for war purposes; at that time his title is mentioned for the first time: "Beno card. S. Martini". In February 1084, he joined the obedience of Antipope Clement III and subscribed his bull of November 4, 1084. On August 7, 1098 he participated, as archipresbiter cardinalium, in the schismatic council at Rome, convoked by the antipope. He was author of the several propagandist works against Gregory VII and Urban II, including Gesta Romanae Aecclesiae contra Hildebrandum (1).

He substituted for Anonis, archchancellor of the Holy Roman Church, archbishop of Cologne, from January to July 1557. Subscribed papal bulls issued on May 8 and 13, and July 7, 1057. Attended the Lateran Synod celebrated on April 13, 1059; appears as a subscriber of its documents.
